I anticipate over 400 of you will be coming to the next Big Top reverse job fair on April 9th in downtown Durham. Some of you are actively looking for a new gig. Some of you are coming to see what’s hot and if there is a company that intrigues you and makes you consider jumping to something new.
I look forward to seeing you. I look forward to feeding you food and connections!
But be aware: one of our tag lines is, “No Resumes – No Ties.”
The first rule of networking is to know your audience. These are tech companies. They all have very informal and relaxed work environments. Wearing a suit and/or tie make you stand out in the wrong way. Don’t wear ripped jeans and a sweaty t-shirt. But be casual and fit in.
The resume will not be the killer door opener for you. Walking around with a stack of 50 copies makes you look desperate.
My advice – get 50 business cards printed with your name, your email and a couple words about your skills (like if you’re a software developer).
Be prepared to introduce yourself to a company representative, briefly (30-45 seconds) give them the highlights of your skills/experiences and share with them what type of role you are interested in. Then hand them your card and ask how you can follow up with them after the event.
Simple, effective. Practice your 1-2 minute highlights and good luck.
